Cold Frames and Hoop Tunnels Need Fall Maintenance

Here's a quick, easy, and absolutely crucial maintenance tip for anyone using cold frames and hoop tunnels to stretch the growing season:

When did you last clean your cold frame lids or mini hoop tunnel covers? Be honest—winter crops need every bit of sunlight they can get, and grungy plastic or glass can really cut down the light reaching your plants.

Cleaning cold frame tops is a breeze—just spritz a soft cloth with a water–vinegar solution or another natural cleaner and wipe them down. Try not to spray near your crops. For the poly covers on mini hoop tunnels, spread the plastic out on a clean surface (I lay mine on a patch of lawn) and mop it with water and a mild detergent. Rinse well, flip it over, and do the other side the same way. Let everything dry completely before you store or re-cover your hoops.
