Avalanche Beet Recognized by All-America Selections

When an All-America Selections judge tasted this beet, the reaction was immediate: for anyone who thinks they don't like beets, this could be the one that wins them over. With that kind of ringing endorsement, we knew we had to dig deeper.

Avalanche brings a mild, sweet flavor to the table that had the judges raving about how good it is raw—yes, raw! Unlike most beets, there's no heavy earthy taste and no bitter aftertaste to contend with. It's the kind of beet you can peel, slice, and eat right there in the garden.

Sun: Full. Height: 10–24 inches. Spacing: Sow 15 seeds per foot in rows 12–18 inches apart. Days to harvest: 50—quick for a beet! Sow: Early spring or late summer, 1 inch apart, ¼ inch deep. Thin: When plants emerge, thin to 3 inches apart.
